The author's own tale of his first days as a seaman aboard a sailer, signing on in the port of San Francisco in 1899 after his time in the Klondyke. Written in his elegant, flowing style he carries the reder along with the sheer excitement of it all.

It reads like a novel, but again truth is stranger than fiction.

first published 1902 this reprint 1986; a book of enduring interest indeed!
